Correct Plumbing Installation of Drains and Water Lines
Do-it-yourself home improvement projects have become more and more popular as people begin to realize how easy it is to do the job rather than to hire a professional and pay a hefty sum to do it for them. One of which is true with plumbing installation of drains and water lines in your home sinks.
Plumbing installation begins with the purchase of pipes. It is important you purchase not just any pipe but that of good quality and workmanship which will guarantee you extended utilization. The pipes should be strong enough to withstand pressure from the water and will not burst. It should also be able to withstand abuse such as form getting kicked or knocked due to its location under the sink.
Sinks are commonly found in the bathroom and the kitchen. Drainage plumbing installation in the bathroom usually requires a 1-1/4” drain and a 1-1/2” drain in the kitchen. Drains usually made from PVC plastic, but some older drains are made from brass or chrome. You may still find these in the hardware store but expect them to be more expensive than the PVC plastic drain.
Besides from the diameter of the drain, you will also need to determine the type of pipe you will need. In the past 10 years, most homes built have horizontal drains. Horizontal drains require P-traps, while vertical drains make use of S-traps. As the name implies, traps filters out the odor that may come from the drain. Debris also collects down these traps making access relatively easy rather than getting stuck along the entire pipeline, which can be a major problem finding the clog. An additional straight pipe will also be required if the sink is far from the floor or wall. If your kitchen or bathroom has two sinks to drain, a T-junction is required to allow both sinks to empty water into the same drain.
Aside from the pipes for the specific drain, you will also need some washers, bolts and thread compounds to connect the pipes between the sink and the floor or wall drain. The pipe thread compound is used to put PVC drain pipes together, acting as a lubricant and helps to fit the pipes together. Later, it turns into a seal that prevents erosion of the pipe from the water. With all the materials and pipes for that specific drain available, the plumbing installation should be easy but you should take time to ensure that you properly and securely connected all the pieces together to prevent any water leaks in the drain or water lines.
Drains and water lines are relatively easy to install, especially if you know what type and size of pipe to avail. Knowing these first few steps, you should realize that you no longer require the services of a professional plumber and that you can do correct plumbing installation of drains and water lines in your home by yourself. Later, you may even find that you can do other bigger or difficult projects such as installing a new tub or shower.
